The Persistence of Dust

The Persistence of Dust
This mound with a circular summit crater is most likely a cinder cone, similar to many cinder cones found on Earth such as S P crater in northern Arizona. With a base diameter of 3 kilometers (1.96 mi.), and a summit crater that is about 900 meters across, this Martian cinder cone is about 8 times larger than S P Crater.

The cone in this image is located just northwest of Ulysses Patera, a shield volcano within the Tharsis volcanic province. Much of Tharsis is blanketed in a thick layer of dust, which hides the volcanic surface textures, but creates its own interesting patterns of deposition, collapse and erosion.
