This image shows layered deposits in Iani Chaos, with an enhanced color cutout. Chaos terrain forms by collapse, and the depression was partly filled by sediments carried by flowing water or from the atmosphere.

Chaos terrain is typified by mesas and valleys. The initial breakup of the land is due to tectonic forces. With time and erosion the valleys widen and the mesas grow smaller.
