Light-Toned Layering in Plains West of Juventae Chasma
Spectacular meter-scale layering is visible in this DTM image of a deposit found along the plains northwest of Juventae Chasma.

Beds within the deposit vary in brightness, color, and erosional properties, indicating multiple materials exist within the deposit. There are excellent cliff-bench exposures along most of the deposit, which results in a stair-step pattern.

Polygonal fractures are commonly found on the surfaces of individual beds and they vary in size and shape. Using the DTM, we can see that the beds are parallel to each other and appear to maintain their thickness across the width of the DTM. Water and volcanism are two likely processes that could have deposited these beds.
