Eastern Margin of Ladon Basin
ESP_026574_1625  Science Theme: Landscape Evolution
This image is from near the eastern margin of Ladon Basin, probably from just outside the basin proper. Ladon Basin lies along the larger Uzboi-Ladon-Morava outflow system that drains nearly 10 percent of the surface of Mars.

The basin is between the Ladon and Morava segments of the outflow system and appears partially filled by materials of unknown, but perhaps water-lain origin. Unlike locations elsewhere around the basin, this location shows little evidence for infilling by light toned sediments.

It is unclear, however, whether that is due to their absence or mantling (being covered) by younger and widespread wind blown sediments. Images like this can be used to map the distribution (or lack) of layered sediments around the basin that can provide clues to the processes responsible for their emplacement.
